ALF BROWN REMEMBERS
Thank you all for your kind
welcome.
I started at JCS in 1951 and
left in 1957. I was also the third generation of my family to attend the
school, an uncle was at the Higher Grade School in the 1890's and my father
was there in 1901, my half brother was there in 1931. A family 'skeleton in
the cupboard' was my father's counsin who taught there. He was Major Fred
Giles and his moment of infamy came when he dangled a misbehaing pupil over
the balcony rail and threatened to let him fall if he did not promise to
behave in future! Discipline? A change from Albert Overton's "A dose of
the steeck boy" or Archie Campbell's lines - 100 times the word
antidisestablishmentarianism.
During my time there I played
football and captained the team at all levels; school team basketball; cricket
against Clegwell, and gymnastics. In fact I spent so much of my time on
sporting activities that my academic side suffered badly. Alongside this I was
also playing cricket from Junior level to First Team at Reyrolles in the
Tynside Senior League. Ron Butcher and Chris Cox, (JCS1951), were playing at
Leslies at the same time.

throughout my time were;

Mr. E. Younson; Mr.Reece; Mr.
T. Dean (a Kenneth Horne look alike).
Headmistresses;
Miss Carr; Miss H. Pattie.

Mr. W. Ramsay.

P.A.(Pasha) Casey; D.(Pop) Young; ? Bainbridge; W.(Knocker) Landells; W.
Trodden. T.(Tot) Scurfield; W. Troupe.
Pupils of 1951;
Pamela Smith (Hutton); Mavis
Annan; Enid Blakey; Anne Bell; Irene Kerrigan (Neave); Margaret Montgomery;

That I think is enough for now
and I hope to return with some reminisces later.
Take care and regards to all.
