It has stirred up some wonderful memories of my short stay at JCS. I was one of the 'Catholic Interlopers' who joined the school in what I think must have been 1965. I seem to remember the class being called 2g2. There is a photo on page 24 of 32 in years 1960 to 1969. I am on the very far right of the picture. Some of my best memories are of the teachers and Miss Patty in particular. She was a very formidable character, but I think that we all knew really that she was a super teacher who in fact had a heart of gold. I was given the choice of staying or moving to St James in Hebburn when it opened. I moved and it was a big mistake. The school had no soul and wasn't a patch on JCS. I missed it terribly. I am still in a state of shock at seeing the old photo especially as I am aware of a least a couple of people on it having passed away. One was my best pal Shaun McAlindon who was tragically killed in amec several years ago. Anyway, you have preserved memories of what was a 'traditional old fashioned school' the like of which will never be seen again. My heartfelt congratulations to all concerned. A piece of Jarrow's history saved forever!!! PS I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me from the wonderful year that I spent at JCS Best of Luck Tony Kennedy

The main reason for the emails has been to show my appreciation to the organisers of the reunions in October and November 2005. They were an incredible experience. The reunion for the 1956 - 1959 group organised by Stewart Jackson and Brenda Thompson (now Parker) was certainly worth the trip home as so many class mates were there. Even after 48 years it was like stepping into the old school hall and talking to the same friendly faces. The wonderful thing was that the shyness had all gone and people hugged and showed their emotions. I recommend that if ANYONE has the opportunity to attend a reunion to 'go for it'. It has been one of the best experiences of my life. If this can be posted onto the message board I would be grateful Muriel

This was agreed to but I had to take up Typing, Shorthand,Commerce, Bookeeping etc. No Problem as I was the only boy in the majority of My Lessons.I believe I was the first ever lad at the School to do this.I also dropped Maths, But could only get away with this if I took The Oxford University Arithmetic exam, This was only made Possible with the help of Headmaster Mr Hopwood and That Fine Teacher Mrs. Armstrong.Just wondering where everybody is Now from this Era--- Sandra Woollard, The Chapman Twins et al. And Yes I did go on to Become a Chef and fulfill my ambition I had from My School Days. Just a little bit of fun now, The Careers Officer then was a very well known Sammy Rowan(Jarrow March) when he asked me what I wanted to do as a Job, was rather taken aback When I said I wanted to be a Chef, Looking bemused he replied I can get you an interview with Dewhurst the Butchers, Needless to say I did not go. For several years, seeing those hoards of Scholars climbing the stairs of the bridge over Bowes Railway from Saint Oswalds Rd to Oak St and wondering if they ever got "mucky" with their uniforms in pristine condition, I was proud to know that two of my Sisters attended that school. A little known fact is that our father Alexander BAKER was a pupil there when it was called the Higher Grade School about 1911/12. I've had a short journey around the site but mainly to the Message Board & Poetry Corners and Although I looked quite carefully I'm afraid except for the obvious I didn't have my memory jolted, but I did think that the name Ruth Roberts rang some sort of bell but in what connection I'm at a loss. After leaving school I trained at South Shields General hospital (now South Tyneside District General) to become a nurse. I attained the post of nursing sister while working for some years in the operating theatre before completing my thirty-two years in the diagnostic centre. I had to take early retirement because I had multiple sclerosis. I still reside in South Shields and manage to retain some mobility with a wheelchair and walker. As a latecomer to PC's and The Internet I managed to log on to the school website the other day and was fascinated by the amount of nostalgia it displayed. It even included photographs of myself. I'd like to thank you for such a comprehensive layout and for the efforts made by you and others to achieve it. I would hope to attend the next reunion for people of our era, providing the venue is accessible and to meet you and others in person. Meanwhile, best wishes to you and others who may remember me.

I seem to remember a competition being held to design a new badge, and the Viking ship design was the winner. Can't remember whose brainchild it was. BTW, anyone know what happened to Peter Harrison (1969 - 1973)? Last I heard he was playing in a rock band. Also, Billy Bartlett and his younger brother Keith? Mike

Your offence, if I recall, was standing in line in the yard with your bag on your shoulder. If you complete your punishment within the next 24 hours we'll say no more about it. otherwise its three laps round the yard and detention at break. Seriously though, I think I have a school photo with you on it somewhere. Happy days...! Mike

Had to laugh at the 'hot air balloon' escapade makes you wonder how we ever learnt anything. I sometimes bump into Mrs Reay (Domestic Science)in Chester le Street where I live and have told her about our forthcoming night out in Newcastle. Is there anybody out there who left in 1961/2/3 who would like to come along - please get in touch.

I seem to remember only being allowed to wear the viking ship tie in 4th year and above but have no idea when it was introduced. The school badge did have the viking ship logo on also (you will be able to see that on the 1971 photo you picked up).

Any idea when the change took place? in my day it was just green and yellow. Did the school badge also have a Viking logo? Was this from the days when The Ben Lomond pub was known as 'The Viking'?

The only delapidation I remember was the main hall floor. It was sanded once while I was there;either the summer of 1947 or 1948 Evenso,it was far from being level and smooth How we all learned to dance with all those bumps is a credit to taffy Jones who during my era ran both the junior and senior dances. I found the greatest advantage in being a prefect was being able to attend both junior and senior dances;also the Christmas dance/dinners I felt privileged The staff you mentioned are all after my era; that is except for Mr Casey who taught form v history in 1949/50 If you periodically check this super site Jean, you won't miss any further reunions I admire your stubborness and dedication to the old school and colours by delaying the transfer It must have been even more heartbreaking for the staff who had to relocate.

I also remember the trial run in the hall, when Mr. Rooney and Mr. Hopwood were there. A certain person in my class punctured it with a paper pellet fired with deadly accuracy from an elastic band. The tissue-paper balloon went up in flames and chaos ensued. I remember our art class spending days glueing hundreds of geometrically shaped pieces of tissue together for the Big Day. Alas, no one thought to make the thing flame retardant and it hurtled down faster than the proverbial speeding bullet. Mind you, apart from a dent in the floor there was no lasting damage to either pupil or property

We've been hoping to get some photos of the 70's so it will be great if you can oblige (They will be returned to you once they have been added to the site). If you're leaving them with the history society can you make it clear who they are for? ie the JCS website. Please put my name, Lance Liddle, on the envelope and if you could email it would be appreciated.

My memories consist of the teachers we had, Pam Cleves, Miss Fagan, Mr Storey, Wilfie Wardle, Mrs Zenner, Mr Casey and Mr Hopwood as Headmaster and so many more. The school was more than a bit run down, we were not able to lean on the ballistrade upstairs for the fear of it collapsing, the Drill Hall was still used for PE (cold and damp)and as far as I can remember the school meals were ok!! Some of us remained at the school rather than transfer to Springfield and eventually went under pressure but wore our Central uniforms and ties with pride. I still have my tie from my last year - green with the viking ship, although this is now looking a bit faded, and my prefects badge (how I got to be a prefect I will never know). Unfortunately, I do not see alot of my fellow class mates, although one had the pleasure of being the best man at my wedding. I do believe that Paul Headley (who ran Dougies Tavern in Hebburn)has had reunions for my era but I always hear about them too late.
