SCHOOL HISTORY

IN THE BEGINNING

In the beginning, or to be precise 1885 during the reign of Queen Victoria, Jarrow Central School was built and opened the following year.

I quote here from a booklet, published in 1925, which was celebrating Jarrow’s first 50 years as a borough.

“The next important event in the educational history of the town took place in 1885 when the school board, in the face of great opposition, decided to build the Higher Grade School (now known as the Central Council School) in order to provide advanced education for older boys and girls.  In spite of the opposition, and of numerous attempts to alter the character of the School, it became the chief centre for advanced day and evening work and has been of incalculable benefit to thousands of girls and boys.”

Further investigation indicates the school ceased being called the Higher Grade pre 1922.

It closed in 1975.
